The 2012 Braidholm 7s was won by the Minerva Builders, a Glasgow Hawks based invitaitonal side captained by former Scotland 7s International Peter Jericevich. The Builders defeated home side GHA in the final by 38 to 22 (6 tries to 4), with a fantastic performance. Peter was later awarded the Specsaver Newlands Player of the Tournament as he led a talented Builders squad starring Hawks full back Craig Gossman, Ayr fly half Ross Curle, Hawks centre Dean Kelbrick and the indefatigible Hawks flanker Grant Strang.

GHA took an early lead through Niall Cassie but the Builders responded with 4 unanswered tries before half time as the home side looked off the pace. However, GHA came back into it in the second half scoring three tries but just as the come back win looked on, Gossman scored a terriffic try from half way, chipping ahead and judging the typically unpredicatable bounce of the ball to perfection to dot down with in millimetres of the dead ball line. As GHA threw caution to the wind with seconds to go, another kick chase from the Builders was scored, this time by the dimunitive Sean Murray who's blistering speed was evident as he raced in for the try on the final whistle.

The Minerva Builders had come through a tough semi final against a well drilled Ardrossan Accies side after putting out he Greencok Wanderers in the Quarters. GHA's path to the final had proved less troublesome as they brushed aside the Monkey Trees in the Quarters before defeating the Melrose Powerbombs 42-0 in their semi final.

In an intense plate final, Hillhead/Jordanhill defeated East Kilbride in an enthralling game.
In the end, the Bal Rams more physical style of play was to prove the difference in the driving rain.

Plate Final: Dyslexia Untied defeat the Tech Tigers

Bright orange sleevless shirts would normally be a good idea for a summer sport like 7s however the Strathclyde University based Tech Tigers probably wished they had gone for wet suits given Saturday's conditions. Nonetheless, they put on some impressive performances as they made it to the Plate Final however they were ultimately undone by an equally impressive Dyslexia Untied team who ran out Plate winners.

Cathc the highlights on Scottish Rugby TV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MlQ0RhTcqU

The Braidholm 7s at GHA Rugby Club in Giffnock, Glasgow, is aiming to become one of Scotland's premier rugby festivals. Now in its second year, the organisers have pulled off a major coup by attracting one of the most famous and successful clubs in European rugby, the Leicester Tigers, to compete in the event.

The Tigers will battle it out against a string of club and invitational sides from throughout Scotland including local club the Glasgow Hawks and GHA's own invitational side, the Glasgow Titans.
The Braidholm 7s is unique in Scotland in that it includes both an Elite tournament and an Open event for those sides who are more focused on the social element of the game, not that the Open event doesn't end up being any less competitive!

Tournament Organiser Rangi Jericevich said: “We are delighted that the Leicester Tigers have agreed to play at Braidholm this year and look forward to seeing them in action. Our inaugural tournament in 2010 was a great success but we feel that we have really stepped things up a notch this year not only on the field but also with the array of pitch side activities and family entertainment that we've got on offer.”

Note to editors: The Braidholm 7s takes place on Saturday 21 May at GHA Rugby Club, Braidholm Road, Giffnock, Glasgow G46 6EB. The event kicks off at 10.30am with the finals set for 4.30pm. Tickets are available on the gate at £6 for adults, £4 for students/OAPS/U18s. U12s go free.

From the Scottish Rugby Website: www.scottishrugby.org/community/

Friday, 26 March 2010

A new breed of rugby sevens tournament has emerged over the past decade.

While traditionally tournament participation would follow an 'invite only' format, the sport's growing popularity has led to an increased demand for 'open' events that permit anyone to apply for entry.

The Braidholm 7s, based at the home of GHA Rugby Club in Glasgow, has been introduced to the rugby calendar with the ambition of becoming Scotland's premier open tournament.

Events that operate an open category, like the Bournemouth 7s and the Manchester Rugby 7s, have seen applications soar in recent seasons.

Outwith the club game, a number of specialised sevens teams have appeared - from corporate-sponsored invitational sides to bands of friends who get together for a few tournaments every summer.

This burgeoning appetite for the game has seen the largest open tournaments develop an almost music festival like reputation, with teams and spectators flocking from far and wide.

Braidholm provides the ideal location for a rugby sevens festival - a large, modern clubhouse, spacious playing fields with plenty of room for spectators, including a stand, ample parking, and good transport links.

Tournament organiser, Rangi Jericevich, said: "We want to create an event that adds an exciting new flavour to the Scottish sevens circuit.

"With our open invite we hope to attract a good mix of clubs and teams from a variety of backgrounds, playing some competitive rugby while enjoying the hospitality and festival atmosphere.

"We've got a variety of things happening on the day, and we've also organised what will be a fantastic after-party held at The Arches, Glasgow's iconic club and music venue."
